Using EddyIn
Do all paddlers need an EddyIn account?
No. Only the people who need to use the app sign in, which usually means trip leaders and club officers. Everybody else is simply selected from the club roster when a trip is created. Most members never log in and never need to.
Can guest paddlers be added?
Yes. A guest is added to that one trip with their name and an emergency contact. They count towards the headcount and appear in the offline safety copy, and they do not become a club member by being added.
Can multiple trips run at the same time?
Yes. Each trip has its own leader, its own paddlers and its own headcount, and they run independently. A beginners session on flat water and a group on a gorge are two separate trips.
Can other club officers see active trips?
Yes, depending on their role. Trip leaders can see the club's active trips, and safety officers and club administrators can see all of them along with the information needed to act if a trip is still open when it should not be.
What happens if a leader forgets to complete a trip?
If a trip is still active after twelve hours, EddyIn flags it and asks whether the trip is still underway. A safety officer or club administrator can close a trip that a leader forgot to complete, and EddyIn records who closed it and when.
Offline and safety
Does EddyIn work without mobile reception?
Active trip safety information is designed to stay available offline once it has been successfully saved on the leader's device. When a trip starts, EddyIn saves a copy of that trip to the phone and confirms it. A trip has to be started while there is a signal for that copy to be saved.
Can a trip be completed with no signal?
Yes. The leader can mark the trip complete at the take-out. EddyIn holds that completion on the device, shows it as waiting to sync, and sends it the next time the app is opened with a connection. The record keeps the time the trip was actually completed, not the time it synced.
Does EddyIn track paddlers using GPS?
No. EddyIn has no GPS tracking and no live location of any kind. It records who went out, who was leading and whether everyone is back. It cannot tell you where a group is on the river.
Is EddyIn an emergency rescue service?
No. EddyIn is a safety support and record keeping tool. It does not contact anybody on your behalf and it does not replace your club's safety procedures or the emergency services. In an emergency, contact the emergency services.
Your club's data
Can we use our existing member list?
Yes. Google Sheets is the first supported member list source. You share your existing sheet with EddyIn with read only access, paste the link, and match your column names to EddyIn's fields. EddyIn never writes to your sheet.
What if our spreadsheet columns are named differently?
That is expected, and EddyIn does not assume any particular layout. After connecting, you match your own column headings to EddyIn's fields. EddyIn makes a sensible guess and you confirm or change it.
What happens when somebody leaves the club?
When they are removed from your sheet, EddyIn marks them inactive and stops offering them when a trip is created. Past trips are untouched, because each trip keeps its own record of who was on it as it was on the day.
Can one club see another club's information?
No. Each club's data is isolated, and that isolation is enforced by the database rather than by what the app chooses to show. A user belonging to one club cannot reach another club's members, trips or emergency contacts.
Who can see emergency contact details?
Only authorised users in your own club, and only where they need them. Emergency contact information is treated as sensitive throughout, it is kept off devices except for the trip currently on the water, and it is removed from a device once that trip is completed and synced.
Availability
Will EddyIn be available as an iPhone or Android app?
EddyIn is a web application designed to work well on phones, and it can be added to a phone's home screen so it opens like an app. It is built so that conventional app store versions could be added later, but nothing is available in the App Store or on Google Play today.
What does EddyIn cost?
Pricing is not settled yet. EddyIn is intended to be affordable for volunteer run clubs and priced to cover the cost of running it rather than to make a return. If you would like to talk about what would work for your club, get in touch.
